Old junk dies hard — Light up a cigarette and enjoy the Clinique 3 Step System.
Estee Lauder's Clinique 3 Step System represents formulation expertise which must have barely made any widespread medical sense when it was first launched in "dermatologist tested" guise in the late 1960s.
The Clinique 3 Step System purports to create great skin from a foundation comprising:
- soap (to strip, dry and irritate the skin);
- nail polish remover as toner (to strip, dry and further irritate the skin, and to occupy financially relevant space between steps one and three) and
- a crude unevenly moisturizing orange-yellow goop (to partially counteract the idiocy of steps one and two, and leave enough residue to warrant repeating those same especially harsh steps at the end of the day).
The Clinique 3 Step System creates a physical and contradictory paradigm of skin deterioration which — probably by design — gives rise to new skin care needs (particularly dehydration, irritation and acne) requiring:
- perceived perseverence of the system with the aim of symptom resolution, however leading to further skin deterioration;
- tweaking to pre-existing use, probably by inadequately qualified over-the-counter recommendations of change to a lower/higher strength of the Clarifying Lotion, which is available in a total of 8 strengths (all strong) for men and women, and representative of much irretrievable wasted time;
- total discontinuation of the 3 Step System — and replacement with other Clinique products not a part of the allegedly complete system, or another brand, more than likely owned by Estee Lauder, and available within a few feet of the Clinique counter.
Clinique soap is based on tallow and although now excluded, Clinique Clarifying Lotions have historically contained all of acetone, phenol, turpentine, thymol and methyleugenol.
Dramatically Different Lotion has historically contained lanolin and mineral oil and has never contained sunscreen, such the Clinique 3 Step System has always had absolutely no effect against photoaging.
Moreover, the net effect of the System is one of mild photosensitization, which enhances photodamage and the likelihood of skin cancer.
By all reports, the Clinique 3 Step System is the most commercially successful skin care range in the world by a large margin, with several complete systems sold every second.
Medically, it is anything but sensible and desirable and constitutes flagrant skin care failure.
Fundamentally, the Clinique 3 Step System is a performative diversion against actual care of the skin as an organ designed to appeal to uneducated or gullible women and men whose incomes equate with its pricing and whom find its presentation appealing outside of its realistic potential as ingredients.
The Clinique 3 Step System is a popular, ubiquitous and redundant relic signifying the real utility and motivation of department store skin care practice: to convert the irretreviable health of individuals' skins into financial profit for manufacturers and retailers by employing disingenuous scientific, placatory, prestigious and luxurious discourses of care.
