Collagen is a natural substance inherent to the skin.
It is also found in muscles, tendons and bones.
Collagen is lost over time, and this results in facial lines and generally less firm skin.
Injectable Bovine Collagen
This collagen may be injected into human skin to re-form a network of collagen fibers. Although sourced from cows, it is purified and sterilized, and the body will typically accept it as its own.
There are other forms of animal collagen used in facial rejuvenation, however bovine collagen is the most popular.
Brands of Injectable Bovine Collagen used in Facial Rejuvenation

Collagen is injected with the aim of:
- improving the contour of skin;
- reducing facial depressions due to scars, trauma or folds which appear in the course of skin aging.
Collagen injections are effective, temporary treatments for:
Glabellar lines - frown lines which run between the eyebrows
Perioral lines - lines commonly found in smoker's skin, they run vertically around the mouth, and are particularly prominent above the lip
Oral commissures - otherwise known as "marionette lines", they appear around the corners of the mouth, and are also especially prevalent among smokers skin.
Forehead lines - these run along the width of the forehead, and are also known as "worry lines."
Periorbital lines - commonly referred to as "crow's feet," these tight wrinkles, accentiated by facial expressions appear at the corners of the eyes.
Nasolabial furrows - "deep smile lines" while run from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth.
Depressed cheek contours.
Facial scars (some, not all).
Acne scars (some, not all).
Collagen may also be implanted into the lips, to redefine the vermillion border, enhancing the "pout" of the lips while reducing "lipstick bleed."

Collagen is a protein, and will break down into amino acids over time. In turn, these amino acids will be absorbed back into the body.
Collagen implants will last from anywhere between one and 6 months, depending on:
- the location of the collagen replacement implant;
- the individual's response to bovine collagen

Injectable bovine collagen is obtained from cows, and may cause allergic reactions in some people.
The incidence of intolerance to bovine collagen injections as one of the modalities for facial rejuvenation is 3%.
A skin test is performed to check if collagen replacement therapy using bovine collagen is suitable.
The test, which is an injection of bovine collagen just under the skin of the forearm, takes a minimum of four weeks to complete, although most allergic reactions surface within the first 3 days.
Signs of bovine collagen replacement allergy include, but are not limited to:
- redness
- itching
- swelling
- tenderness
- hardening
If a reaction occurs but is very mild in nature, a second test of the other forearm may be carried out as confirmation of the exact nature of your sensitivity.
Other Factors in Determining Suitability for Collagen Replacement Therapy
Other factors may point to collagen replacement being unsuitable:
- allergies to many medications, including local anaesthetics;
- allergies to many foods, meat products in particular;
- family allergies;
- personal allergies to other substances;
- skin disorders;
- connective tissue disorders

Collagen replacement injections are usually administered by a specially trained nurse or doctor.
A typical collagen replacement injection procedure is as follows:
1. The skin is cleansed in such a way that no residues remain.
2. The area into which bovine collagen will be injected is sterilized.
3. A needle containing the bovine collagen, saline and some local anesthetic is injected into the skin, just below the area deemed to require rejuvenation.
4. The area into which the bovine collagen in injected may be smoothed over before it becomes firm.
Notes on Collagen Injection Procedures
The treated areas may be red and swollen afterwards. It can take up to 3 weeks for this redness and swelling to clear completely.
Follow up after the first skin collagen injection treatment will normally be in 2-3 weeks to assess results.
Subsequent treatments, which will be required for maintenance, may not be followed up in the same manner.
Anti-aging skin care and facial muscle firming treatments can support and enhance the result of collagen injection procedures.
The need for injectable facial collagen can be curtailed through the use of the face lifting treatment, which naturally enhances collagen and elastin production to more closely match youthful levels.

- minor discomfort
- redness
- swelling
- numbness of the skin
- tenderness of the skin

Allergic reactions to collagen replacement injections occur, but these should be ruled out with a test injection into the forearm before the procedure proper is undertaken.
Signs of collagen replacement injection allergy include, but are not limited to:
- redness
- itching
- swelling
- hardness of the skin
- tenderness
- discomfort
- hives
- scarring
