Alkali

Alkalis release hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water.

An alkaline skin care solution has a pH greater than 7.

  • These chemical compound that neutralize or effervesce with acids and turns litmus blue. Examples of a caustic or corrosive substance of this kind are lime and soda.

Often contrasted with acid.

ORIGINS

Late Middle English (denoting a saline substance derived from the ashes of various plants, including glasswort).

From medieval Latin, from Arabic ‘calcined ashes (of the glasswort), from "kala" to "fry" or "roast."
