Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is the name given to abnormally increased pigmentation.

Among the most common expressions of this phenomenon are "age spots" and "sun spots" which are among the primary, severe symptoms of photoaging.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is also a type of hyperpigmentation.

Sensitized or damaged skin is especially prone to developing hyperpigmentation.

Indeed the problem can develop after such seemingly insignificant events as waxing, glycolic acid peels, electrolysis, acne breakouts and short periods of unprotected sun exposure.

Jan Marini Bioclear Cream, Lotion and Skinceuticals Phyto Plus Gel are effective hyperpigmentation treatments. The first two are acid-based therapies whereas the latter is botanically based.

Phyto Plus Gel is the more rapid solution to hyperpigmentation, although it does not offer the skin resurfacing benefits of Bioclear.

  • Download the relevant Skinceuticals PDF (82.4 kB) for a graphic overview of the hyperpigmentation process and further treatment details.

Note: Any hyperpigmentation therapy must include daily use of a true broad spectrum sunscreen as UV rays are key triggers of excess pigment production. Bioclear and Phyto Plus address pre-existing conditions that support excessive pigment production giving rise to spots, freckles or patches, however they are not sunscreens. Although effective sun protection is an important factor in everyone's skin health, individuals prone to hyperpigmentation should be especially vigilant in using and understanding photoprotection.

Example Effective Hyperpigmentation Revision Therapy

AM

Jan Marini C-ESTA Cleansing Gel (slightly acidic pH, non glycolic)

Skinceuticals Phyto Plus Gel (dedicated hyperpigmentation therapy)

Jan Marini Antioxidant SPF 30 (true broad spectrum SPF, non-whitening)

PM

Jan Marini C-ESTA Cleansing Gel (slightly acidic pH, non glycolic)

Skinceuticals Phyto Plus Gel (dedicated hyperpigmentation therapy)

This protocol is suitable for all skin types, although very dry skin would most likely appreciate a moisturizer after Phyto Plus Gel.
