Quinine

Quinine is a bitter crystalline compound present in cinchona bark, used as a tonic and formerly as an antimalarial drug.

An alkaloid, its chemical formula is C 20 H 24 N 2 O 2.

ORIGIN

Early 19th century, from the Spanish quina ‘cinchona bark’ (from Quechua kina ‘bark’ ) + -ine.

Benzoquinone

Benzoquinone is a yellow crystalline compound related to benzene but having two hydrogen atoms replaced by oxygen.

Its chemical formula is C 6 H 4 O 2; there are two isomers, with the oxygen atoms on opposite ( 1,4-benzoquinone) or adjacent ( 1,2-benzoquinone) carbon atoms.
