Skinceuticals C E Ferulic – Maximal Primary Antioxidants 30 mL/1 Fl. Oz.

Suitability, performance and superiority of this product against other options are only guaranteed when prescribed.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic – Maximal Primary Antioxidants 30 mL/1 Fl. Oz.

In dry skin of most skin conditions, Skinceuticals C E Ferulic helps improve skin's protection against premature and permanent aging resulting from incremental exposure to daylight and (to a lesser extent) other sources of damage.

The prime benefit of its use in cosmetic dermatology is to extend the protective ability of daily-use sunscreens against photoaging beyond their existing capabilities, which are largely inadequate to prevent premature aging.

When applied underneath broadest protection sunscreens, fresh Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Serum (manufactured and used within four months) provides approximately eight times the skin's naturally-endowed level of protection against ultraviolet.

Applied underneath sunscreen, Skinceuticals C E Ferulic prevents the accumulation of approximately 55% more permanent UVA/UVB-induced permanent skin degradation than sunscreen alone.

For the best prognosis possible, daily sunscreen use alone is inadequate to prevent photoaging symptoms, namely:

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic's preventive effect is brought by its supplementation of the skin's two major and synergistic antioxidantslipid soluble skin-native Vitamin E (1% concentration) and water-soluble skin-native Vitamin C (15% concentration) – which exist at inadequate levels within the skin for optimal photoprotection irrespective of dietary factors, supplemented by the plant-native photoprotective antioxidant ferulic acid.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic is suitable for normal to dry skin with little to no tendency toward sensitivity.

Individuals with combination or oily skin should use Skinceuticals Phloretin CF instead of Skinceuticals C E Ferulic.

For deeper-penetrating and more firming Vitamin C, and possibly greater UVA protection, use Skinceuticals Serum 20 AOX+, Obagi C Clarifying Serum, Obagi Professional C or IS Clinical Advance+ Serums.

A product containing tocopheryl glucoside such as Glytone Vitaceutical Serum may be used in place of the Vitamin E in Skinceuticals C E Ferulic if you choose to use one of the deeper-penetrating alternatives above.

Note: Products containing Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can be irritating to some individuals. If you have sensitive skin, commence use with a milder Vitamin C alternative such as La Roche-Posay Active-C or Alyria Antioxidant Capsules which contain 10% and 5% ascorbic acid respectively. To acclimatize skin, commence use with one application every other morning and increase use to once daily as tolerated in a manner as per the instructions for optimizing results from Prevage MD. Introduce more concentrated Vitamin C products such as Skinceuticals C E Ferulic (15% Vitamin C) or Skinceuticals Serum 20 AOX+ (20% Vitamin C) over time if possible.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic may be combined with or used in rotation with other antioxidants.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic – Dermatological Evaluation of Tolerance and Efficacy

Skinceuticals

A clinical trial of twenty-four weeks was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of a topical antioxidant composition (Skinceuticals C E Ferulic) containing vitamin C, E, and ferulic acid.

35 females aged 30–60 years with facial fine lines and wrinkles, self-perceived sensitive skin and frequent breakouts were evaluated for symptoms of photoaging and side effects of Skinceuticals C E Ferulic therapy.

Available through reception.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic – Evaluation of Effects on Special Molecular Biomarkers of Oxidative Stress in Skin of Healthy Subjects After UVA 1 Irradiation

Skinceuticals

The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of topical antioxidants against oxidative stress induced bio-markers in healthy human skin.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic's Time to Results

In the majority of cases limited improvement is seen within the first two weeks and significant cosmetic improvement within four months.

The most visible benefits of ongoing antioxidant and photoprotective treatment can be expected to accrue for up to a year, however Skinceuticals C E Ferulic should be considered permanent prophylaxis along with sunscreen.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic helps limit aging and does not treat existing wrinkles.

13 July 2009

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic's Efficacy for Pre-Existing Skin Aging

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic is an antioxidant used to help prevent the development of premature skin aging attributable to ultraviolet (photoaging) in conjunction with sunscreens, retinoids and other antioxidants.

The effectiveness of Skinceuticals C E Ferulic in reducing the appearance of existing premature aging varies when used alone without other major therapies, however is unremarkable.

In any event, Skinceuticals C E Ferulic is a primarily preventive measure, not a corrective one.

13 July 2009

Effect of Discontinuing Skinceuticals C E Ferulic

Once discontinued, improvement gained from combined use of Skinceuticals C E Ferulic and sunscreen will recede at a roughly linear rate commensurate with its period of use.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Supply & Storage Notes

Due to the unstable nature of topical ascorbic acid contained within Skinceuticals C E Ferulic, each bottle must be used soon after manufacture to ensure its performance.

Melbourne Dermatology recommends using only Skinceuticals C E Ferulic produced less than four months prior to use.

The freshest product possible yields the best possible result.

Store the product in the refrigerator once opened and protect from light.

Skinceuticals Antioxidant Storage Notes – Protective/Preservative Refrigeration

Skinceuticals Antioxidant Storage Notes – Protective/Preservative Refrigeration

In warmer weather, and perhaps all year round, it's best to store Skinceuticals Antioxidant Serums under darkened refrigeration to preserve and extend their ingredients' potential.

Additional environmentally-related supply notes:

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Samples

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic sample bottles allow small amounts of air to penetrate and oxidize the ascorbic acid component of the serum's small volume.

Oxidized Vitamin C is not ascorbic acid, it is dehydro-L-ascorbic acid.

Benefits of Vitamin C to skin are attributable to ascorbic acid, not dehydro-L-ascorbic acid.

Topical application of oxidized ascorbic acid produces free radicals which foster oxidative stress and accelerate skin aging.

Subsequently, samples of Skinceuticals C E Ferulic will only be supplied if they are freshly available.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic samples are only supplied during consultation, from a refrigerated state, intended for complete use within a few days.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Samples Discussion

The website of Dr. Audrey Kunin features the question/concern:

... I've read in a website that using skinceuticals ce ferulic samples (3.75ml) for more than a few days can accelerate skin aging because the small bottles allow small amounts of air to oxidize the ascorbic acid and thus hasten skin aging when applied (instead of anti-aging). also, that samples can only be used a few days after they have been manufactured. is this true? how long can i use a sample after it has been opened? ...

Dr. Kunin replies:

This is not true whatsoever. The samples should be used within a few days of opening.

The advice seems contradictory, for the response that the contents should be used in entirety "within a few days of opening" plainly points to the formula having a very short life.

However the user's question is misleading, because the original information stated neither that samples needed to be used "within a few days of manufacture" nor that they were always unsuitable (singularly or in succession).

Further, refrigeration is known to extend useful life, the manufacturer recommends storing in a cool, dark place, expiration occurs in under a year, and the published scientific data makes repeat mention of stability issues.

As antioxidants are naturally unstable compounds, they provide challenges for formulation and supply. To work, they must be chemically stable, they must get into skin, they must not expire before use, and they must be used at meaningful concentrations.

Very small amounts (3.75 ml) will oxidize more readily than larger amounts because the ratio of exposed surface area to total content is much greater, just as small apple pieces will turn brown (reduce) faster than larger pieces.

Serum darkening marks a loss of antioxidant potential owing to denaturation by oxidation, and is probably one of the main reasons the manufacturers of some ascorbic acid serums colour them more orange than they will end up after having spent time on a shelf or cooking under department store counter lights.

La Prairie reflected this in C Energy Cellular Serum and even moreso in Cellular Defense Shield SPF 15 by preventing ascorbic acid from coming into contact with air, and by not allowing it to combine with their sunscreen for more than 12 days at a time.

Left to expire, Skinceuticals C E Ferulic separates into fluid and gel, and ultimately crystallizes.

The extent of harm possible by applying substantially oxidized ascorbic acid at a low pH to skin is not known, and probably relatively minor if infrequent and at low percentages, but there can be no question that it forces a pointless aging burden on skin because the formula continues to penetrate into and affect the dermis whether it is pristine or not.

As we are told, such formulas cannot be washed off once absorbed, so our skin's must metabolize them for better or worse.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic studies do not pertain to oxidized C E Ferulic.

As a preventive treatment for ongoing use, it isn't really clear why samples are made because it is not possible to judge effects (positive or negative) before at least four months.

In practice, we recognise when this has occurred by having measured change over time by objective, scientific measurement, and by replacing treatment which is found to have performed poorly in a timely manner to maximize skin health.

It seems reasonable to conclude that the grey and black market trade in antioxidant samples is centered around a belief that purported benefit is as good as actual and that infrequent/incomplete use is therapeutic.

That is the department store/beauty therapy mandate. Skin care of this undertaking is superficially moisturizing and psychologically beneficial only.

You cannot force dermatological principles on poor materials and practices and produce physical benefit – you will produce relative detriment.

Asking a dermatologist to process misleading information may allow you to feel better about doing the wrong thing, but it secures an inferior outcome.

Individuals who insist on skin care by ongoing sampling never realise therapeutic benefit because their skincare is a performative distraction and time marches on.

There's no point in insisting that the time for rehearsals is still now after the curtain has already gone up.

Skinceuticals C + E vs Skinceuticals C E Ferulic

The newer formula lacks zinc sulphate and bioflavonoids, however ferulic acid, propylene glycol and glycerin are now present and SD alcohol absent.

Propylene glycol consistently causes irritation in oilier skin types and SD alcohol generally enhances product penetration and therefore beneficial activity, including firming and antioxidant protection.

The original C + E formula likely produced better (deeper) Vitamin C and E penetration than the newer C E Ferulic formulation however was less stable, less photoprotective and more likely to stimulate acne.

14 July 2009

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic vs. Skinceuticals Phloretin CF

Skinceuticals Phloretin CF is an alternative to Skinceuticals C E Ferulic for individuals with combination to oily skin and has been shown to provide identical photoprotection to Skinceuticals C E Ferulic.

However, Skinceuticals Phloretin CF has been shown to prevent elastase and enhance elastin production, while Skinceuticals C E Ferulic has not.

Distinct from Skinceuticals C E Ferulic, Skinceuticals Phloretin CF contains less firming antioxidant Vitamin C and no antioxidant Vitamin E (as alpha tocopherol), however includes phloretin – an antioxidant bioflavonoid and hormone – possessing anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-glycogen and sebum-regulating properties.

Although Skinceuticals Phloretin CF contains 5% less Vitamin C than Skinceuticals C E Ferulic, Skinceuticals Phloretin CF contains SD alcohol and is oil-free.

Phloretin itself is also claimed to be a penetration-enhancer.

These factors contribute to greater skin penetration, therefore the amount of Vitamin C delivered to the skin in both formulas is likely very similar.

If you would like to use Skinceuticals Phloretin CF for it's elastin-regenerating and elastin-protective properties, which are absent from Skinceuticals C E Ferulic, but would not like to forego the benefits of Vitamin E, or experience dryness from Skinceuticals Phloretin CF (which is intended for combination to oily skin), you can use Skinceuticals Phloretin CF in conjunction with a product containing tocopherol glucoside such as Glytone Vitaceutical Facial Serum. This combination will provide even greater general antioxidant and photoprotection than Skinceuticals C E Ferulic.

Skinceuticals CE Ferulic vs. Skinceuticals C+AHA

Can I combine Skinceuticals Serums? I am already using Skinceuticals CE Ferulic but would like to use glycolic acid which I notice is found in Skinceuticals C+AHA.

Skinceuticals CE Ferulic versus     Skinceuticals C+AHA

There is merit in using these two Skinceuticals antioxidant serums together or in alternation, particularly if you have combination skin or a tendency toward uneven skin texture.

Skinceuticals C+AHA contains zinc sulfate and bioflavonoids which are useful antioxidants absent from Skinceuticals CE Ferulic.

The glycolic and lactic acid in Skinceuticals C+AHA are skin-resurfacing agents which also increase the penetration of the Vitamin C for greater antioxidant protection.

Therefore I do not believe Skinceuticals CE Ferulic can be presumed more beneficial than Skinceuticals C+AHA.

If you would like to use both, apply the Skinceuticals C+AHA underneath the Skinceuticals CE Ferulic and reduce your use of Skinceuticals CE Ferulic by half.

To judge the difference in performance accurately, make sure you persist with any skin care changes you make for at least 4 months.

Skinceuticals CE Ferulic for Stretch Marks

I've heard that Vitamin C serums can help reduce new stretch marks. Is this true, and would Skinceuticals CE Ferulic help?

Skinceuticals CE Ferulic for Stretch Marks

Vitamin C serums can stimulate collagen production which may help reduce the appearance of stretch marks, however high concentration, low pH glycolic acid and retinoic acid are likely more effective topical options. Therefore you would only use a Vitamin C serum in addition to these options.

Because stretch marks occur in the dermis, the deepest portion of your skin, you will need the deepest-penetrating Vitamin C to get the most optimal effect, should you wish to try this. A low concentration Vitamin C serum is most likely to be an expensive waste of time.

The most potent Vitamin C serums are Obagi C-Clarifying Serum, IS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ and Obagi Professional C Serum 20%, the former being available on prescription only.

Obagi Professional C Serum 20% contains zinc chloride, which helps break down damaged collagen, and other ingredients which drive Vitamin C in further, factors absent from Skinceuticals CE Ferulic. The concentration of Vitamin C is also 5% higher and the product is more stable.

Alyria Exfoliating Cream Level 3 (30% glycolic acid) and Glytone Body Lotion (17.5% glycolic acid) are glycolic acid options.

If you notice stretch marks, begin treatment at home immediately and schedule a visit with a laser dermatologist – once the stretch marks have changed colour from red/purple/pink to white, there is far less which can be done.

Jan Marini C-ESTA Serum vs. Skinceuticals C E Ferulic

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic     Jan Marini C-ESTA Serum

I was wondering if you could tell me the difference between Jan Marini C-ESTA Serum and Skin Ceuticals C E Ferulic acid?

Plus which one would be better for a younger skin in their early 20's?

Jan Marini C-ESTA Serum contains ascorbyl palmitate and deanol and Skinceuticals C E Ferulic contains ascorbic acid, tocopherol and ferulic acid.

It should be noted that there are some concerns over the safety and suitability of large concentrations of ascorbyl palmitate and deanol.

In recent times, some manufacturers have removed or replaced ascorbyl palmitate from their products.

This includes the "Ester-C" products marketed by Dr. Nicholas Perricone's N.V. Perricone Cosmeceuticals, from which Jan Marini C-ESTA is said to be derived.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic is a more effective protective product in theory however most people use oxidized versions of Vitamin C products which are useless or possibly harmful.

It was once thought that ascorbyl palmitate was more stable than ascorbic acid, however testing has confirmed that in fact both are inherently prone to considerable oxidation, therefore the claimed shelf-life and superior antioxidant advantage of Jan Marini C-ESTA over Skinceuticals C E Ferulic and similar products may not actually exist.

It is true that Jan Marini C-ESTA Cream is less prone to discolouration (oxidation) when refrigerated so it seems likely it is not stable.

People generally report more immediate skin firming with Jan Marini C-ESTA than Skinceuticals C E Ferulic however long-term firming results are likely to be different.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic may irritate sensitive skin and stimulate acne in prone individuals while Jan Marini C-ESTA is generally well-tolerated.

If you'd like to try using a Vitamin C product, rather than use either of these, it is better to start with Alyria Antioxidant Capsules, the 10% Vitamin C content of which does not oxidize prior to use by virtue of a combination of formulation and packaging, and which is gentle enough to safely and comfortably test suitability on virtually any skin type or condition.

For additional advice it would be best to ask actual users including specialists at: http://www.derm.net.au/discussions/.

Instructions for Use of Skinceuticals C E Ferulic

Apply Skinceuticals C E Ferulic in the morning only.

Cleanse the skin with an appropriate facial cleanser, such as Skinceuticals Foaming Cleanser or Jan Marini C-ESTA Cleansing Gel, which are suitable for all skin types and conditions.

Ideally, wait 1-2 minutes before proceeding.

Apply 4-5 drops of Skinceuticals C E Ferulic to the face and neck, and ideally allow to absorb for 5 minutes.

Always follow with Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel.

Optionally, improve anti-aging treatment further by applying one of the Skinceuticals Corrective Moisturizers:

Results are enhanced by adequate dietary antioxidants (particularly Vitamin C, which is drawn first from the skin when the body's supply is depleted), and by supplementing various non-dietary nutritional substances, particularly such as those found in Jan Marini C-ESTAMINS.

C E Ferulic Excess Application Notes

Applying more than the recommended amount of 4-5 drops is not beneficial.

The recommended amount will be seen and felt to dissipate throughout the facial tissues.

Application more than once a day is superfluous and may produce irritation.

C E Ferulic Periocular Application Notes

Avoid contact with eyes and eyelids. Use Skinceuticals Eye Gel AOX+ for under-eye treatment to extend some of Skinceuticals C E Ferulic's effects to this area.
