Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20

Suitability and performance are not guaranteed outside of an ongoing individualised protocol.

Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20

Arguably the most effective and elegant of the zinc oxide sunscreens providing comprehensive reflective protection against the effects of UVA, the trojan horse of premature aging of the skin.

The chemical sunscreen component of this product is encapsulated to forestall irritation or possible long-term problems attributable to daily use — the only use which provides meaningful photoprotection.

Provides moisture suited to any skin type prone to a degree of dehydration.

Patients with oilier, shine-prone skin will prefer the drier finish of Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense SPF 30.

Both Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 and Ultimate UV Defense SPF 30 provide protection in excess of their stated SPFs.

Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 Mode of Action

Ultra-fine zinc oxide reflects and encapsulated octinoxate absorbs the broadest gamut of carcinogenic and aging UVB and UVA radiation, responsible for photoaging.

If used as directed, provides up to 40% protection against photoaging.

Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 Instructions for Use

Apply as the last step of any skincare routine (before any make-up).

For increased photoprotection, apply after photoprotective antioxidants, such as those available in Skinceuticals Serums and Corrective Moisturizers.

Diverse topical antioxidant use is preferred over single antioxidant use.

Application after Skinceuticals C E Ferulic provides approximately 90% complete protection against photoaging.

To be effective, the product must be applied generously — you should aim to use 90 mL every 45 days or so.

Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 Advanced Usage

Enhance the tone and wear of the sunscreen by resurfacing the skin with a product such as Skinceuticals Intense Line Defense or Jan Marini Bioglycolics, and by moisturizing underneath with sodium hyaluronate.

For enhanced photoprotection, reapply once daily (around midday), or brush the skin with a powdered sunscreen brush such as IS Clinical SPF 20 Powder Micronised Physical Sunscreen Brush.

Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 Notes on Extended Use

Apply in the same manner to the hands, ears and all sides of the neck for the same photoprotective effect.

The water-resistant sunscreen Skinceuticals Sports UV Defense SPF 45 is usually preferable for use on hands.

Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 Contraindications to Use

None — chemical encapsulation generally prevents sunscreen allergy in prone individuals and protects healthy individuals from developing sensitivities.

Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 Compare and Contrast

Most similar to IS Clinical Healing Treatment Sunscreen.

Individuals with shine-prone skin will prefer the drier finish of Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense SPF 30.

Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 Further Information

Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 vs. Ultimate UV Defense SPF 30

SPF 20 / SPF 30

Many are under the impression that an SPF 20 such as Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 provides 1/3rd less sun protection than an SPF 30 such as Ultimate UV Defense or Jan Marini Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant SPF 30.

But they'd be wrong.

An SPF 30 makes use of about 30% more sunscreen agents than an SPF 20 to provide just 8% more protection against UVB rays.

Lower SPF sunscreens typically provide:

when compared with higher SPF sunscreens.

Any sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher provides good protection against UVB rays, providing it is used as directed (ie. the correct amount is used, and reapplied at the recommended frequency).

SPF 30 has become the norm because users equate higher SPFs with better protection and no downsides and marketing is at play — no sunscreen manufacturer wants to be seen as providing inadequate sun protection!

In preventing damage to skin, daily sunscreen use is essential, so ensuring a sunscreen is elegant to wear, pleasant to apply and easy to use/reapply is essential.

  • Such, in the important longer term, a "lower" SPF (15-20) is more suitable for daily "city wear" than a higher SPF.
    • If you are routinely exposed to high altitudes or outdoors all day, then a high SPF is indeed appropriate.

For daily city-use, under makeup, Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 is generally preferable to Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense SPF 30.

If you insist on using a high SPF for daily use, then Jan Marini Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant SPF 30 is a more elegant choice when compared with Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense SPF 30 — absolutely non-whitening, with no chemical sunscreen scent and suitable for all skin types with simultaneous moisturizing and excess oil-absorbing properties.

Please note that protection against the more dangerous and aging UVA rays is only provided by some sunscreen agents, such as Parsol, Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide.

Full protection against the sun's rays, comprehensive "photoprotection," and therefore ideal protection against premature skin aging can only be afforded by combining certain primary antioxidants with certain sunscreens.

Hyperpigmentation Treatment: Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20

According to Dr David Eccleston:

“Your first line of treatment should be a daily application of an SPF of at least 20, to prevent further discoloration.”

It is especially important to keep this up if you are treating pigmentation with intensive ingredients or treatments, as these can increase sun sensitivity.

Try SkinCeuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20. It provides UVA and UVB protection through transparent zinc oxide, which deflects harmful rays without leaving a ghostly white residue. It is also good for wearing under make-up.

Spot of bother, Times Online, UK — Susannah Taylor.

Freckles might look sweet, but give them a spell in the sun and they can prove just as ageing as liver spots.

Commentary: Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 — New Beauty Magazine

"Ideal for sensitive and post-procedure skin, this broad-spectrum sunscreen contains 5% zinc oxide for daily sun protection without the white residue."

Improving Tone and Wear of Sunscreens

Improving Tone and Wear of Sunscreens

Whitening of facial skin and thick, pasty product texture are two aspects of sunscreen use which attract criticism and are among the prime reasons sunscreens are rejected as an everyday proposition, despite their critical role in preventing unnecessary deterioration of skin over time.

Sunscreens and antioxidants protect against permanent changes in skin texture, tone, deep wrinkles, firmness, age spots (and other forms of hyperpigmentation).

A popular response is to eschew proper sunscreen use for foundations with SPF, or ultra-light/milky sunscreens — but these are not comparable.

Improving Tone and Wear of Sunscreens

A dedicated and generous sunscreen product is required to effect the product tenacity required for stated and lasting sun protection.

Foundations with an SPF of 15 offer only negligible protection. Their SPF in practice is only around 2 because foundations cannot be applied in a quantity adequate to reach their stated level of UVB protection.

An SPF of 2 will have no appreciable value just a few hours of its application, well before the sun has reached its peak.

Would you opt for an SPF of 2 for a day by the beach? Aging UVA rays are stronger and deeper-penetrating than superficially burning UVB rays, and for all intensive purposes they're just as much a feature on a hot summer day as they are on a cold, winter day.

Government drug regulatory agencies such as the FDA and TGA certify product SPF by testing for protection offered by an amount equal to a tablespoon applied to an area the size of the face.

So how do you ensure elegant, reliable sunscreen wear that's on par with the best kind of skincare?

Your Skin and the Sun: Past, Present, Future — October 2006

Your Skin and the Sun: Past, Present, Future — October 2006

Make no mistake, the appearance of your skin is inextricably linked to its health.

So do you know to protect it, or if already damaged how you can begin to return it to its former glory?

You may be surprised to learn that the solution is not just daily sunscreen use, "natural" skin care or Strivectin.

While certainly very important, daily sunscreen use alone has little visible anti-aging effect on individuals over the age of 25.

The latest Melbourne Dermatology skin care monograph, Your Skin and the Sun: Past, Present, Future presents only the most current and irrefutable prescriptions in a format everyone can grasp.

Present patients and clinic clients will a receive their complimentary copy in the next 1-2 weeks.
