Tricomin by ProCyte is based on the FDA-approved Iamin Hydrogel, a form of the antioxidant superoxide dismutase used in wound healing, with a noted side effect of hair growth stimulation. Superoxide dismutases are endogenous enzymes — proteins cofactored with copper, zinc, manganese, iron or nickel — which catalyze the disproportionation of superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, forming a vital antioxidant defense for nearly all eukaryotic cells exposed to oxygen. Experimental studies in mice have shown that increasing cellular production of superoxide dismutase increases lifespan. This class of enzymes is also found in some skin care products aimed at preventing photodamage and preventing/treating hyperpigmentation (La Prairie Cellular Defense Shield, Vivité Vibrance Therapy, Citrix Antioxidant Body Lotion and SPF 30). Topical superoxide dismutase has been shown to reduce post-irradiation breast cancer fibrosis. Another ProCyte product, GraftCyte, comprising a concentrated superoxide dismutase spray and moist dressing, is FDA-approved to prevent transplanted hairs from entering the telogen phase. The telogen phase is the resting phase of the hair follicle. At any time 10-20% of all hairs are in the telogen phase. The telogen phase lasts for about 100 days on the scalp, and much longer for the eyebrows and eyelashes. The patented superoxide dismutase found in Tricomin (Alanine/Histidine/Lysine Polypeptide Copper HCI) is a copper peptide marketed for use in the treatment of hair loss and poor hair and scalp quality, and is also found in Neova Advanced Essential Lash, a product marketed for eyelash enhancement. A decrease in hair quality and a loss of hair can be due to decreased growth, increased shedding, breakage or the conversion of thick (terminal) hairs to thin (vellus) hairs. These scenarios can be as a result of medication intake, genetic and hormonal influences (including stress), internal conditions (iron or thyroid deficiency) and skin diseases or conditions (seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis) which injure the hair follicle. Copper helps inhibit 5A-Reductase which in turn reduces the formation of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a cause of hormonal hair loss, and has been shown to stimulate collagen production, a reduction in which has been associated with less well nourished hair bulbs. Tricomin may be used to help maintain a healthy scalp and hair or in combination with proven hair loss therapies (Propecia, Minoxidil, Aminexil, Proxiphen and Retinoic Acid) with the aim of enhancing results and reducing scalp irritation (itchy scalp) which may occur with the use of topical hair loss medications. Tricomin Solution Follicle Therapy Spray is used in a manner similar to a leave-in conditioner, applied either to damp or dry hair and scalp. It is the most potent product containing the highest concentration of the Alanine/Histidine/Lysine Polypeptide Copper HCI antioxidant superoxide dismutase in an alcoholic base for deeper penetration. Tricomin Revitalizing Shampoo and Tricomin Restructuring Conditioner also contain Alanine/Histidine/Lysine Polypeptide Copper HCI in addition to hydrolyzed keratin and may be used in conjunction with Tricomin Solution Follicle Therapy Spray. Please note that Tricomin Deep Conditioning Treatment does not contain Alanine/Histidine/Lysine Polypeptide Copper HCI. Tricomin Before and After Picture Source: ProCyte.
